I have been using ubuntu since its Feisty Fawn distro. This decision, of course was rather personal as most corporate laptops are bundled with Windows family of operating system (OS). The decision came as a response to the lingering and persistent technical limitations of the bundled Windows OS'es.
I have been working in the pharmaceutical industry (marketing, sales, promotion), so most of my corporate needs are productivity suite applications (i.e. spreadsheets (Excel), presentation apps (PowerPoint), word processor (Word), e-mails, and connectivity. Every so often, my laptop get ravaged by a lot of malicious softwares whose viral replication and mutation are at a pace more than Norton, MacAffe, and AVG can handle.
Apart from that frustrating experience, the Windows OS'es (starting from the experiences I have had since Win 3.1x, to Win 95, Win98, Win Me, Win 2000, Win XP, and worst Windows Vista) have never impressed the least of my technical expectations from Microsoft, a software giant full of cash; albeit I'm still having XP for contingency purposes. I have tried out Vista for one(1) month but have to revert the system back to XP. I have downloaded my own copy of Windows 7 RC1 but never get to install it completely as it required a higher-then-usual computing resource.
Much least, these OS'es do not give justification to the company cost incurred for the legitimate and licensed softwares it's using in its system viz-a-vis the productivity it brings to its people in the field. Many times I have to contend myself staring idly at those hour glass which seemed to last forever. TIME is of the essence and pretty much an irreplaceable resource. And nowhere in any field than in the world of selling that everything gets quantified - even TIME! So much for the lamentations and philosophizing the frustrating experiences! There is no use crying over spilled milk, especially in the business world! Gladly, there are pragmatic alternatives. Fortunately, my technical prowess haven't faltered since my college years.
I successfully have my minimally-spec'ed laptop dual-booted with the Feisty Fawn before. Thus, when my Windows system goes berserk, I can have a quick fix by re-starting and booting with my Linux/Ubuntu. Oftentimes, when the Windows Explorer application built into most Windows OS'es would go crappy and buggy, the rest of the other applications running would most likely be stoned as well, leaving you with the time to smoke a pack of cigarettes and consume three cups of coffee! Hence, ubuntu was not just a hobby or an exhibition of technical prowess, but it is a pragmatic refuge and a very compelling one. I do not work for the IT department of the company, so it ain't really my turf.
Many times, when I booted the system under the Linux/Ubuntu system, I can just easily delete the malicious files [e.g. viruses, those with *.exe, *.inf, and the likes]. To be certain, the Linux/ubuntu system in more ways than one, has given me a helluva lotta productive benefits that were otherwise been short-changed by my Windows system! And the BEST there is --- it is TOTALLY FREE of CHARGE!
In fact, my copy of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS both 32-bit and 64-bit edition were sent to me totally FREE of charge by Canonical Ltd. of the UK. Canonical Ltd. (www.canonical.com) has pre-paid for me the postage/parcel cost of sending. This would not have been possible without the benevolent billionaire Mark Shuttleworth.
Quite recently, around hours just lapsed, the Final Release of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is made available for download (www.ubuntu.com). I have an old iMac G3 system at home which I managed to upgrade its operating system to OS X 10.4, and the visual appeal has some resemblance. The great thing with Ubuntu (Lucid Lynx) is that it is FASTER! Well, perhaps the Core 2 Duo brain can be a logical explanation, while my iMac has a G3 PPC. The latter is now relegated just for archiving files. Nonetheless, ubuntu and many of its generation of distros have very minimal System Requirements.
Kudos to the whole Ubuntu Community and for Mark Shuttleworth, in particular! I might not be part of those "coding community" who has given us ,ubuntu users, updated packages in order to have the most worthwhile experience, but in the course of everything that I do, be it in TEACHING and SELLING, I always made it a point to inform and persuade people to try Ubuntu. And now the BEST by far - Ubuntu 10.04 LTS (Lucid Lynx) - Final Release - is now available for download @ www.ubuntu.com.
Most people have the Fear of the Unknown and the innate resistance to change has always been an ordinary objection. The pinnacle of all these is when the TIME comes that the superior technical underpinnings of ubuntu can be elucidated in the manner that ORDINARY USERS can APPRECIATE. And if we BUILD IT, IT WILL COME....
